Another move and this time I am at Esk Valley. At Goathland 61994 coupled onto the train brought in by Lambton Colliery No 29 and now heads for Whitby with 1Z44, 1630 off Goathland. The train is dropping down the 1 in 49 gradient towards Esk Valley and Grosmont.
61994 and its train passes the row of cottages at Esk Valley built for ironstone miners that worked the surrounding hills. Almost half are now owned by people who work on the railway.
The track at the top of the shadow is the route of the original Stephenson built Whitby and Pickering Railway which was worked by horses and went via the 1 in 15 rope hauled incline at Beck Hole.
