The Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has always been unique insofar as its railways were concerned and has survived with cast offs and hand me downs. When steam was abolished the railway was converted to third rail electric and former London Underground stock was brought over. Today class 483 units which were introduced on London Underground in 1938 are in service. 5-7/4/2004

  • The north end of the tunnel is much more accessable than the south end. 002 descends into the 391 yard long tunnel with 1648 from the Pier Head station. The tunnel dimensions was the deciding factor in what stock was available to replace the vintage steam hauled coaches.
