The Great Britain Rail tours

In April of 2007 the Railway Touring Company, with West Coast Railways, ran an ambitious series of separate railtours which covered the whole country hauled by several different steam locomotives on consecutive days, they called it "The Great Britain". What started out as a one off has repeated itself every year since. I have been involved with several of them as support crew with A4 60009 and K4 61994 and photographed others when able.

After a spirited drive from North Queensferry I find I am ahead of the train so I grab a bonus shot from the over bridge at the Boreland, Kirkcaldy.
The gutsy class 5 mixed traffic loco, the LNER's answer to the LMS Black Five, blasts up the rising 1 in 114 gradient with nine on and a class 47 on the back.
As the train passed by I noticed the radiator slats on the roof of 47760 were closed suggesting it was not helping the B1 on the climb. Here the line goes from climbing at 1 in 114 to falling at 1 in 158. In just over a mile the train will put inside at Thornton North loop.
