Every year on the first weekend after the May Bank Holiday, the Swanage Railway hosts its now famous diesel gala and beer festival. Wall to wall diesel action with visiting locos and the home fleet mixed in with a beer festival. It dates from between 1066 and 1087 by William the Conqueror and was added to and strengthened by following monarchs. The castle remained a royal fortress until sold by Elizabeth I in 1572 to her Lord Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton. The castle was bought by Sir John Bankes, Attorney General to Charles I, in 1635 and remained in the Bankes family until bequeathed to the National Trust in the 1980's. During the English Civil War the castle was besieged by Parliamentarian forces twice, unsuccessfully in 1643 and again in 1645 when it fell to Cromwell's men. In March 1645 Parliament voted to demolish the castle and it has remained so ever since. The Bankes family decided not to rebuild it after the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660.

  • Type 3 push pull fitted class 33/1, 33111 powers up from a signal check at the down home and passes over Sandy Hills Lane with 2H12 1330 from Norden to Harmans Cross. The stone flagged roofs of the cottages form a beautiful foreground to the shot.

All the day's trains were running 40 minutes late but in the right paths. All times given reflect the published timetable.

The earliest known incumbent is recorded in 1280. It was named after St Edward the Martyr who was murdered on 18th March 978 on the orders of Queen Alfthryth, his stepmother. Most of the village, and the castle, is owned by the National Trust having been bequeathed by the Bankes family in the 1980's.
