Return to the Somerset and Dorset Railway

I never travelled on the S&D, it closed just after my fourth birthday. But I have driven along the line visiting the stations and tunnels and some of the notable viaducts several times, not always taking photos sadly. These pictures are from two trips, in 2019 and 2021 plus a few from much earlier trips and we go from the south to the north.

    The rear of the station buildings on what was the down platform.
    This is all that remains of Evercreech New station.  A footpath crossed the line at the end of the platforms and that footpath still exists.  The stonework and bricks with the iron railings are part of the south end of the up platform, it is the end of the ramp. The rest of the site has been cleared and houses built upon it.
The station opened in 1874 with the completion of the extension of the S&D from the nearby Evercreech Junction to Bath. It closed in March 1966.
    The eleven arch gently curving Prestleigh Viaduct, originally a single track structure, it was doubled by having another build next to it and the two stitched together.  After the railway closed many years of no maintenance the viaduct started to fail and became dangerous.  It was demolished in 1993.
