Return to the Somerset and Dorset Railway

I never travelled on the S&D, it closed just after my fourth birthday. But I have driven along the line visiting the stations and tunnels and some of the notable viaducts several times, not always taking photos sadly. These pictures are from two trips, in 2019 and 2021 plus a few from much earlier trips and we go from the south to the north.

The eleven arch gently curving Prestleigh Viaduct, originally a single track structure, it was doubled by having another build next to it and the two stitched together. After the railway closed many years of no maintenance the viaduct started to fail and became dangerous. It was demolished in 1993.

On the outskirts of Shepton Mallet and
this is the formation of the former Great Western Railway Witham to Yatton line and the bridge just ahead is where it crosses the S&D. The GWR line closed on 9/9/1963. It seems I did not take any photos of the view looking down from the bridge for whatever reason possibly because there was nothing to photograph.

Charlton Viaduct looking north. Shepton Mallet station, located about a quarter of a mile behind me, was opened on 20 July 1874, it was renamed Shepton Mallet Charlton Road to avoid confusion with the nearby GWR station in 1883. The station consisted of two platforms with the station building on the up side. There was also a goods yard and cattle dock controlled from a signal box.
The station closed to goods in 1963: passenger services were withdrawn when the SDJR closed in 1966.
