On shed at Thornton

A few images from the eleven years, 2007 - 2018, the locos 60009 and 61994 were based at Thornton. Other locos who came were 4464 "Bittern", 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley", 60163 "Tornado", 70013 "Oliver Cromwell", 6201 "Princess Elizabeth", 62005 and various Black Fives.

  • 61994 "The Great Marquess" sits over the pit in the shed being prepped for a trip the following day. 47804 will drag the loco out so it can be lit.

  • 47804 is back on the other shed road and 61994 has acquired a headboard, "The Fair Maid". Graeme and I had a play, under Fraser's supervision, driving the class 47 up and down the siding.

  • In the bothy, John, Marilyn and Fraser wonder if they'll manage all that beer that evening! The K4 has just been serviced, fire cleaned, ashpan emptied, smokebox emptied, it will be coaled in the morning. This was a quick turn round as it was booked to run engine and coach to Fort William the next day.

  • The loco ran for a period as 4492 "Dominion of Canada" in LNER Garter Blue with valances. Afterwards the valances and livery was retained when it returned to its own name and number.

  • The shed is locked and the crew are on board and everything is ready for the off. The driver gives a blast on the whistle for departure and the white steam contrasts well with the black smoke from the fire.

  • The tender was converted to a corridor tender during its overhaul, as persevered the loco was not fitted with one. With Bittern spending time here all three running A4's have been to Thornton.

  • A4 60009 stands on shed at Thornton possibly for the last time. It is prepped and ready to go for a slow trip south to Shildon initially for display there for a while before then heading to Bury and into the workshops of Ian Riley for serious repairs to the axleboxes and motion. 18/7/2016

  • Driver Steve Chipperfield whistles up for the departure, 5Z60 1952 Thornton to Shildon. Due to the issues with the bottom end it is timed to Shildon at a speed of just 30 mph the WHOLE way.
