Milford Yard, Selby and Gascoigne Wood

Day 2 of my mini North Yorkshire tour and I start off at a place I never visited when I lived just a few miles away at RAF Church Fenton. South Milford Yard is a major stabling point for loaded and empty coal trains. Selby station is a shadow of its former self and Gascoigne Wood is just a massive white elephant with the closure of the Selby coalfield. 8/8/2006

    The monolithic and defunct coal loading towers and the feeding conveyors at Gascoigne Wood are now a white elephant. Work on the Selby Coalfield started in October 1976 and the six new mines were linked underground with all the coal being brought to the surface here. But by October 2004 it was all over, closed. Geological problems and the high cost of production against cheaper imports were the reasons given.
    185115 pass below the conveyors which took the coal from the drift mine and fed it into the towers for loading into trains. The set is working 1K22 1642 Manchester Piccadilly to Hull.
