Early one morning something stirred

Around 05.30am and I'm on my way to work for a 6am start. But during the longest months the sun is well up at this unnatural hour so on a few cloudless mornings I head off with my camera and look what I've seen!!

  • A short while after the sleeper had passed, 43182 led an empty Virgin HST down the bank heading for Dundee. This is 5V49 0432 Craignetinny CS to Dundee ECS. On arrival it will form 1V49 0639 to Penzance, "The Cornishman".  30/5/2000

  • 47791 in RES livery brings its six coach train past the village of Kingskettle. The train is made up of four mkIII sleepers and two mkII seating coaches. The sleeper service is branded the "Night Caledonian".  27/6/2000

  • The empty stock working from Craigentinny to Dundee follows the sleeper by about 5 or so minutes. The powercars are 43121 and 43198.  27/6/2000

  • I had my camera with me at work after a promise of an early finish, my intension was to catch the sleeper. In the event I finished at the booked 6am and the sleeper was running late. 67013 passes over Markinch Viaduct running about an hour down.  4/7/2002

  • The time is 5.30am and the sun light is bright but the shadows are long. 67018 comes down the 1 in 95 gradient at Welltree with the Aberdeen portion of the joint Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen sleeper.  24/5/2003

  • Two days after the previous shot and 67018 is still rostered to the Aberdeen portion. Right on time is comes by and crosses the River Eden with the early morning sun just glinting off the cab side and the loco reflected in the still waters of the river.  26/5/2003

  • I had wanted this shot for more than 15 years, ever since I first drove over the hill in 1988 and saw the line. The only time the sun light is right is very early in the morning during the summer. 67026 comes by Welltree descending Falkland Road Bank. I went to work very happy this morning.  24/6/2003

  • The next day dawned bright and cloudless and again I went to Welltree. 67026 runs down the 1 in 95 of Falkland Road Bank with its six coach load. The three portions split at Edinburgh, 1S25 for Aberdeen leaves at 0440.   25/6/2003
