An unknown class 170 turbostar passes over Castle Cary Viaduct below a rainbow with 1A59 1041 Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen. Is the pot of gold in the back cab? 2/10/2010
A few minutes after the previous train had passed another eastbound service crosses the viaduct. The turbostar set works 1R46 1045 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh service which was once top and tailed class 27 locos on a rake of five or so mkI coaches. Then came the push-pull class 47/7s with mkII coaches and now a three car turbostar running every 15 minutes.
The sky is dark and brooding as the set passes by. I was looking for a location to photograph a steam working (see Mainline Steam) but this was not it. On leaving I went ankle deep in liquid mud, yuck!!
I moved to Greenhill Lower Junction and my goodness how it has grown in the seven years since I was last here!! 170394 passes by with 1A61 1158 Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen express working.
Crossing the road to get the going away shot and the junction proper. The line to the right runs up to the E&G at Greenhill Upper Junction.
I was caught out by this as I didn't hear it coming and was looking the other way! 66206 works a rake of empty HTA coal hoppers with 4J06 1106 Longannet Power Station to Hunterston empty coal hoppers. 2/10/2010
Another occasion at Greenhill Lower Junction and 158870 in the new Scotrail livery heads for Glasgow with 2J45 1343 Falkirk Grahamston to Glasgow Queen Street bathed in lovely autumnal sunshine. 6/10/2012
Also wearing the new livery is turbostar 170415 dropping down from Greenhill Upper Junction with 1A67 1341 Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen. The growth of trees in the last few years has been prolific.
Saturday freight action now and Freightliner 66598 approaches with 4C20 1326 Longannet to Carstairs empty coal hoppers.
The loco swings over the first turnout as it heads for the Cumbernauld line.
The lengthy train crosses over the down line and takes the road to Cumbernauld. On arrival Carstairs it will recess and move off to wherever it is required for reloading.
Five minutes after the green team had passed, the red team gets in on the coal action with DBS 66140 coming into view with a loaded rake of HTA hoppers running as 6G07 1230 Hunterston to Longannet loaded coal hoppers.
158706 takes the pointwork to gain the Cumbernauld road with 2J65 1443 Falkirk Grahamston to Glasgow Queen Street class 2 working.
In the opposite direction is 158712 standing at signal GJ417 waiting for other trains to pass. This unit is working 2J42 Glasgow Queen Street to Falkirk Grahamston.
The reason for 158712 waiting passes by on the line between the two junctions. 170457 forms 1T22 1242 Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street and passes by 170404 on 2N16 1418 Glasgow Queen Street to Alloa. Once this set is clear the class 158 will get the road.
After a few minutes 158712 gets the road and moves away enroute to Falkirk.
Up on the Edinburgh and Glasgow line an unknown turbostar unit speeds by with 1R54 1445 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh east bound.
Piper Cherokee Arrow G-AWFC flies overhead at Greenhill. The pilot has "dangled his dunlops" so the undercarriage is down and could be about to put down at the nearby landing strip grandly called Cumbernauld Airport.
Meanwhile back on terra firma and 170470 runs uphill to Greenhill Upper with 2N52 1436 Alloa to Glasgow Queen Street.
More freight action and 66174 comes up the 1 in 110 gradient with the empty bogie tanks from the distribution depot at Dalston on the Maryport line in Cumbria. The train is 6S36 0847 Dalston to Grangemouth empty bogie tanks.
On the E&G line a class 170 turbostar passes by in the new livery with 1R14 1515 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh.
170478 wears the carmine and cream colours of the new defunct Strathclyde Passenger Executive and forms a class 2 working from the dormitory town of Dunblane to Glasgow, 2N48 1513 off to Queen Street station.
An immaculate Ford Capri Laser approaches on the road. Taken for my son Ross who also has a Capri Laser.
