  • An unusual exhibit for a Railway Centre but this Chieftain Tank arrived at the centre on the 29th September 2003 from the Bovington Tank Museum. Located in the Down Yard for several years, it was originally intended to be mounted on the War Well. However, as a relatively modern tank it was never intended to be transported by rail, and was too wide for the loading gauge. In October 2015 it returned to the Bovington Tank Museum. (Info from the BRC website).
It is a Chieftain Mark II built in 1970 by the Royal Ordnance Factory, Leeds, fitted with Stillbrew armour around the turret front. Its service included CVD Ludgershall, Queens Royal Irish Hussars and 2nd Royal Tank Regiment (source: Bovington Museum Vehicle Record). Marked ‘LOAN OUT’ in Bovington museum record on 28 December 2005.

  • This locomotive, of Peckett class OY-1, was one of only six, being part of a batch of four built to the order of Courtaulds in 1948. When new, No. 2087, then named Dafydd, was sent to Courtaulds' Aber Works, Flint, North Wales. It was subsequently transferred to Wolverhampton, where it lost the name. Finally, No. 2087, went to Courtaulds' Red Scar, Preston, plant. Here it was rebuilt with parts from scrapped sister engine No. 2086, and worked until replacement by diesel in 1968. During its time at Preston, No. 2087 received the name Miranda.

After withdrawal the loco was purchased by the Lytham Creek Motive Power Museum. In March 1980 it was transferred to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for possible use there, although in fact the loco was never steamed. A QRS member purchased No. 2087 in 1983, and in December of that year it was moved to Quainton. (Info from the BRC website)
It left the railway in January 2018.

  • A move to Quainton Road and Freightliner 66581 rumbles through the Buckingham Steam Centre preservation site with 6M22 0917 Cricklewood to Calvert loaded binliner. On the right is a Chieftain tank. The station was opened by the Great Central Railway on 30/11/1896 to replace a smaller one a short distance away. It closed completely on 4/7/1966 with passenger traffic ceasing on 4/3/1963. Freight continues to pass by and the occasional passenger train will call for the Buckingham Railway Centre which has grown up around the station since 1969.
