Barrow Hill LNER Gala 2009

The preserved round house loco shed at Barrow Hill is the setting for an LNER themed gala with a varied selection of locos from the former London and North Eastern Railway stable. I was there, with my son Ross, as R.O. for A4 pacific 60009 Union of South Africa. 3/4/2009

  • John Cameron's A4, 60009 Union of South Africa stands inside Barrow Hill's former Midland Railway square roundhouse on the 54 foot, 8 1/2 inch diameter turntable, too short to turn it.

  • 41708 is a class 1F 0-6-0T loco designed by Johnson for the Midland Railway in 1878 and is the only one preserved.  It ran for a few years at Swanage as a half cab.

  • A varied selection of locos was inside the shed on display. Included are former Midland railway 1F 0-6-0 41708 and ex LMSR Black Five 45110.

  • 506 is part of the National Collection and is a class D11/1 Director built for the Great Central Railway and is named Butler Henderson.

  • Black Five 45110 looks the part in the shed. I have worked support crew and been on the footplate on the mainline with this engine when it was based on the Severn Valley Railway.  It participated in the 15 Guinea Special railtour to mark the end of BR steam on 15th August 1968.

  • Out in the yard, N7/4 69621 acts as yard pilot and has re-positioned A2 pacific Blue Peter. Now it scurries away.

  • An impressive line up of former LNER locos, classes A1, A2, A4 and K1. It was a real shame that A3 4472 Flying Scotsman was not available.

  • This Romney, Hythe and Dimchurch Railway loco is very similar in appearance to the A1 Tornado. This loco carries the name Typhoon, also an aircraft, and was given the number 60164.
