2011 Swanage Railway Diesel Gala

The 2011 Swanage Diesel Gala promised to be something completely different with the offer of a secondman turn with one of the drivers on the Friday. I was the rostered secondman on the loco for the day taking up an offer made the previous year by one of the senior drivers.   • The previous train was brought in by former Fastline freight 56301. As the stock was the 3CIG unit 1498 strengthened with a dual braked mkI, a translator loco was not required for the class 56. Now is is released and passes the box running into the yard.

  • Home based 33103 runs in with a five coach set that was parked up overnight at Harmans Cross. The loco ran light from Swanage, retrieved the coaches and formed 1N06 1025 Harmans Cross to Norden.

  • Unusually the signalman has allowed the down train into Corfe before the up, this is due to the up being a little late. 37503 fronts 1H09 1330 Norden to Harmans Cross and a crew member is ready to surrender the token. The new Corfe signalbox is finished, fitted out and fully functioning.

  • Carrying the "Lost Boys 1968-1988" headboard, 56301 with 33103 runs in with 1N24 1310 Swanage to Norden. The headboard relates to the position of Second Man on diesel locos which was done away with in 1988 with most second men being promoted to driver. Previously they were the steam firemen.

  • Having boarded the class 37 hauled shuttle at Corfe we get off at Harmans Cross and quickly walk up to the over bridge to record the Norden bound shuttle, 1N26 1345 off. The Deltic is opened up big style and D9009 puts out the clag like a steam loco lifting its safety valves!!

  • Day three and I'm at Corfe to watch the 3CIG 1498 being retrieved from the yard by 73205 and 73136. I had hoped to photograph them passing the shunting dummy in the off position but I was too late. Here they have already gone into the yard to couple onto the unit. 8/5/11
