  • The Hawk first flew in August 1974 and is still in production in the UK, it is primarily an advanced trainer with some airframes being equipped as short range interceptors.

  • Day three of the farewell tour took in Scotland with flypasts at Leuchars (my fifth and final unit), RAF Tain Air Weapons Range (my second unit) and RAF Lossiemouth.  Leuchars was home to 2 squadrons of F3 air defence variants of the Tornado, 43 and 111 Squadrons.
43 Sqn flew the F3 Tornado between September 1989 and July 2009 when it was stood down as a squadron.  111 Sqn was equipped with the F3 between June 1990 and March 2011 when it too was stood down.

  • As well as the threeship formation flight, a fourth airframe flew to the left and slightly behind them and I'm guessing the navigator was fliming the flypast.  My son Ross was at Tain to see the flypast there and said there were five in total, one of whom rocked its wings in salute as it flew by.
