A View From a Window

A trip to Dorset involved flying from Edinburgh Airport to Southampton Airport in a FlyBe Dash 400 aircraft. Whilst over the Lake District the cloud parted revealing a wonderful view of the snow covered fells below. 20/1/2016

  • In the lower right Thirlmere is visible with Helvellyn in there on the east flank to the right centre of shot.  In the  lower centre is Clough Head above Threlkeld with the snow covered area of Matterdale Common reaching back to Ullswater in the centre of the shot.  Martindale Common and Bampton Common takes the eye towards the cloud layer to the south east.

    In the lower right Thirlmere is visible with Helvellyn in there on the east flank to the right centre of shot. In the lower centre is Clough Head above Threlkeld with the snow covered area of Matterdale Common reaching back to Ullswater in the centre of the shot. Martindale Common and Bampton Common takes the eye towards the cloud layer to the south east.

  • Looking east to Penrith just beyond the end of the snow cover, white smoke from a works chimney is visible.  In the centre the circular looking hills are collectively the Caldbeck Fells with summits of Carrock Fell and High Peak  with the ridge to the lower right being Saddleback or Blencathra.
Coming to the bottom of the shot we see the Uldale Fells and Skiddaw Forest in the bottom right with Skiddaw itself just to the right of the window edge.

  • Opening the lens out to take in the whole vista with Keswick just visible through the dirt on the window just above the bottom left corner.  Derwent Water is to the right and Borrowdale stretches out along the bottom of the shot with the rugged snow covered Castlerigg Fell above Derwent Water.  Then we see Thirlmere with Helvellyn and Ullswater in the centre.  Penrith is to the left deep into the view.

  • Opening the lens out to take in the scene from 30 odd thousand feet.  Thirlmere is to the left just below centre with Borrowdale in the bottom left corner.  Ullswater is just left of centre.

  • I was able to identify this location at the time and did not need to study maps to put names to places.  Below is the village of Coniston with the north end of Coniston Water.  In the bottom left corner is the eastern flank of The Old Man of Coniston.
